Guidelines

  • Target sodium intake: Less than 2,300mg daily (ideal target 1,500mg for those with hypertension or at cardiovascular risk). Choose fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Use herbs, spices, lemon juice, and vinegar for flavoring instead of salt. Read nutrition labels carefully - look for "sodium-free" (less than 5mg), "very low sodium" (35mg or less), or "low sodium" (140mg or less) per serving. Rinse canned vegetables and beans to remove excess sodium. Cook meals at home to control sodium content. Avoid adding salt during cooking or at the table. Choose fresh or frozen vegetables over canned. Select unsalted nuts and seeds. Be aware that even foods that don't taste salty may contain hidden sodium. Watch for sodium in condiments, sauces, and dressings. May help lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease and stroke, and decrease fluid retention. Keep a food diary to track sodium intake. Consult healthcare provider for personalized sodium targets.
